Benign enlargement of the prostate (BPH = benign prostatic hyperplasia) is a common disease in men. Initial symptoms associated with bladder emptying are increasingly noticed as of the age of 40.
One in two men over the age of 501 develops the typical symptoms of a benign enlargement of the prostate:
Because of these symptoms, urinating becomes an unpleasant activity.
Other changes to the prostate may result in similar symptoms. Ensure you seek medical advice before turning to self-help measures.
Which specific factors are responsible for the development of BPH have not yet been fully clarified. What is certain is that the male sexual hormone testosterone stimulates the growth of the gland. While a healthy prostate is about the size and shape of a chestnut, under some circumstances it can gradually grow to the size of an orange. The growth comes primarily from an increase in the cellular tissue in the centre of the gland around the urethra. As a result the original tissue is displaced outwards and the urethra becomes increasingly compressed.
